A Family of Single Electron Static Buffered Boolean Logic

In this paper we investigate single electron tunneling (SET) devices from the logic design perspective, using the SET tunnel junction’s ability to control the transport of individual electrons. More specifically, we focus on the implementation of a family of Boolean Single Electron Encoded Logic (SEEL) gates, in which the logic values 0 and 1 are encoded as a net charge of 0 or 1 electron charges. We first present a general scheme for implementing SEEL threshold gates. Second, we present a static buffer that reduces the feedback effect encountered in networks of SEEL gates. We then propose a family of buffered logic gates of which each gate consists of a threshold gate derived logic gate combined with a static buffer. We demonstrate via simulation that the gates of the proposed logic family operate correctly in a network. Keywords— single electron technology, SET, logic circuit, buffered gates
